Volkswagen Polo GT Overview

The hatchback market in India has always been a popular one, especially among the middle class people, who form a large section of the crowd. Volkswagen Polo GT is one of the popular hatchbacks in the country. There are lots of Volkswagen Polo GT variants to choose from that offer different sets of features and are available at different prices.

Volkswagen recently launched the facelifted versions of the GT TSI and the GT TDI. The top end GT Polo’s are the go faster versions of the regular Polo. The company first launched these cars in 2013. Volkswagen first launched the Polo GT TSI with a 1.2 litre petrol engine mated a DSG transmission. Then later they came out with Polo GT TDI that came with a diesel engine taken from the Volkswagen Vento. Check for car loan interest rate.

These cars soon become some of the best hatchbacks available and were soon called “warm” hatchbacks. For the Indian petrol head, these cars are a boon. With power outputs of around 105 PS, they are some of the most powerful hatchbacks available at a decent price. For the facelifted model, the company launched the GT TSI and the GT TDI together but they were launched a month after the regular Polo. So what has changed with the newer cars? From the looks of it, not much actually.

Volkswagen Polo GT Design & Style

The new styling for the Polo GT variants is largely the same as seen on the standard Polo. Frontal changes include a new grille, bumper, headlamps and integrated fog lamps with cornering lights. These new progressive elements lend the car with a subtle and more matured stance. The chrome line running through the intake grille along with the new headlamp adds to the upmarket positioning of this car. At the rear, the bumper along with the tail lamp cluster features a new design. The license plate holder is now integrated into the rear bumper, imparting a cleaner look to the rear section.

We mentioned it in our review of the earlier GT TSI that the lack of a distinct visual identity for the GT variants could be a disappointment for some. In the new GTs that hasn’t changed and one still gets the discreet GT badging on the grille & below the C-pillar (only in TSI) and black ORVMs as the only key visual differentiators.

Volkswagen Polo GT Cabin & Space

The Polo interiors also have got a minor upgrade too. These small changes that have been made from time-to-time have kept the interior styling fresh. The Polo’s interior dashboard quality is top notch. The Polo comes with features like integrated music system with bluetooth, aux and USB connectivity, reverse parking sensors, dual airbags and ABS, electrically folding ORVMs and even steering mounted audio controls. The new multi-information display on the instrument cluster and the steering wheel controls look premium. The interiors of the GT has black interiors and the regular one has black and beige interiors. Even the seats on the GT are black in colour instead of beige.

The Polo has just a cosmetic upgrade and hence there isn’t any change in its space. The front row seats are large and offer good support. The side support on the front seats is much better than most of the other hatchbacks. The rear seat space is very little. Two fully grown adults cannot sit behind one another in a Polo. The space will be a bit too tight. This is one downside of the Polo, however it fine for a family of a couple with small kids. The boot though is large enough to carry stuff for an entire weekend.

Volkswagen Polo GT Engine & Transmission

Looks can be deceptive, especially with the GT TSI. It’s powerful 1.2 litre turbocharged petrol engine is a little monster that can move mountains. The 103 BHP power never lets you down and the car gives you 175 Nm of torque from as low as 1200 rpm and consistently pushes you back in the seat till the rev meter hits 4000 rpm. It’s like a turbo diesel engine torque, and it catapults the car from 0-100 km/h in less than 10 seconds. This is probably the only hatchback in the country right now that can achieve this kind of time. Check for Polo GT in Icps2016

The engine is mated with a 7-speed dual shift gearbox (DSG), which is the best transmission you can get on a hatchback in India right now.The gear shifts are so fast that you have to look at the instrument panel to know what gear the car is in. There are two options on the car, the normal ‘Drive’ mode that gives you fuel efficiency and a ‘Sports’ mode that gives you performance. You’d probably want to drive this car only in ‘Sports’ mode when the engine revs are high and all those gear shifts happen near the red line of the RPM meter giving you acceleration all the time. The GT TSI has a claimed fuel-efficiency of 17.2 km/l but we got just 11 km/l irrespective of the driving mode.

Volkswagen Polo GT Driving Dynamics

Anyone who’ll spend some extra bucks for buying this hot-hatch would obviously expect fun times behind the wheel and the GT doesn’t really disappoint on that part. The road grip and stability is rock solid, like a true German. In fact, even past the 150 kph-mark, the car feels relaxed and marches comfortably like a warrior, better than many of today’s entry-level sedans.Polo has always been a great handler and GT is no different. Target a series of quick bends and it would be more eager than you to run down the curves. For more information on Volkswagen Polo GT check AutoZhop

The steering wheel is decently communicative and every move of the wheel is met with positive response. The suspension setup has been carried forward from the regular Polo that hovers somewhere between being overtly soft or stiff. A reworked stiffer suspension would have been an icing on the cake, but I don’t have complaints with this either, as it soaks up the bumps beautifully well, and keeping the conditions of our roads in minds, this is a boon.

Volkswagen Polo GT Safety & Security

Safety equipment on the Polo GT includes electronic stabilization programme, hill-hold control, dual-front airbags, ABS and front fog lamps with cornering lights. The exterior profile gets several styling elements like dual-beam halogen headlamps in black finish, chrome application on air dam, GT badge on front grille and GT doorstep garnish. Cabin packs sporty flat-bottomed steering wheel with controls for audio Bluetooth and voice command.

Volkswagen Polo GT Round Up

The Polo GT has a distinct positioning in the Indian market, which goes a long way in acting as an advantage. From a technical perspective, the performance of both the variants is impressive as well, which should be received well by its potential customers. That said, where the car misses out is the lack of distinctive styling considering the cost. Beyond that the GT twins are well-equipped cars, which offer a good combination of performance, comfort and safety technologies. Both versions of the Polo GT are priced at Rs 7.99 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi, and at this price they seem to be priced high but at the same time offer unmatched performance credentials in their segment.
